About the Cover

Cover Figure

Cover In wild-type Volvox carteri (left) only the ~16 large cells (gonidia) have reproductive potential; the ~2000 small somatic cells eventually undergo programmed death. But mutation at the regA locus leads to breakdown of this germ- soma dichotomy: the small cells of regA-, or "somantic regenerator," mutants first differentiate as normal-looking somantic cells, but later redifferentiate as fully functional gonidia (right).
