A chorus line of tracheal cell migration. Shown is the expression pattern of trachealess in the developing Drosophila embryonic tracheal system. Tracheal cells that form earlier in the tracheal pits migrate in a sterotypic manner to form a continuous tubular network. trachealess encodes a bHLH/PAS protein that is responsible for specification of several tubular cell fates, including the tracheal system, salivary ducts, and posterior spiracles. (For details, see Zelzer et al., p. 2079.)
