Impaired differentiation of p27Kip1-/- oligodendrocyte progenitors. Shown are phase-contrast micrographs of p27-deficient (top) and wild-type (bottom) precursors in culture following mitogen withdrawal. The majority of p27-/- progenitors have few simple processes and lack the highly branched morphology characteristic of mature oligodendroctyes. A minority of p27-/- precursors that differentiate into mature oligodendrocytes (middle) are identified by positive immunoreactivity for myelin basic protein (MBP).
