Hoxc13 expression in hair. Shown is the expression pattern in a mouse hair follicle of Hoxc13lacZ, a mutant allele that contains lacZ fused in-frame to the Hoxc13 DNA sequence encoding the homeodomain, as detected by beta -galactosidase staining (blue), and immunohistochemistry analysis of epidermal type II keratin (K2.6) intermediate filament protein as detected by anti-K2.6 antibody (brown). Hoxc13 expression is seen in the rapidly dividing keratinocytes in the hair bulb and extending up the hair shaft as well as in the nucleus of the companion layer of the root sheath. (For details, see Godwin and Capecchi, p. 11.)
