Roots of Arabidopsis eir1-3 plants display defects in the gravitropic response. Shown are pairs of Arabidopsis wild-type (curved) or eir1-3 (straight) seedlings grown on plates placed at 90° for 5 days and then manually reoriented so that the roots were parallel to the earth's surface. As shown in pairs depicted horizontally, wild-type seedlings reorient root growth in response to gravity, whereas eir1-3 seedlings do not. EIR1 encodes a root-specific protein involved in auxin transport. (For details, see Luschnig et al., p. 2175).
