Dach2, a vertebrate homolog of Drosophila dachshund, is expressed in the muscle precursor population of the developing somite and in muscle precursors that migrate into the body wall and limb buds. Shown here is a stage 17 chick embryo stained for Dach2 RNA expression (purple) by whole-mount in situ hybridization. Expression is seen in the muscle precursors and in the dorsal neural tube. Dach2 synergizes with Eya2 and Six1 to regulate muscle development. (For details, see Heanue et al., p. 3231; see also the related Perspective by Relaix and Buckingham, p. 3171.)
