Bmp4 expression in the vicinity of primordial germ cells (PGCs). Shown here is a histochemical analysis of a heterozygous Bmp4lacZneo/+ embryo at the headfold stage. The section is doubly stained for beta -gal activity (blue-green), which represents Bmp4 expression, and alkaline phosphatase activity (pink), which defines the PGCs in the allantois. Bmp4 is expressed in cells in the vicinity of the PGCs but is clearly excluded from them. (For details, see Lawson et al., p. 424.)
