FILAMENTOUS FLOWER (FIL) is required for organ development and the maintenance of meristem activity. Shown is a scanning electron micrograph of epidermal cells on the adaxial side of a wild-type Arabidopsis leaf (background). FIL expressed ectopically results in patches of abaxial cells on the adaxial leaf surface (inset). FIL encodes a protein with HMG-related and zinc-finger domains. (For details, see Sawa et al., p. 1079; for review, see Sessions and Yanofsky, p. 1051.)
