FACKEL encodes a sterol C-14 reductase important in Arabidopsis embryogenesis. Shown here is an Arabidopsis fk-X224 mutant seedling that exhibits a short, thickened root, short hypocotyl, and misshaped cotyledons. The structural formula for 5alpha -ergosta-8,14-dien-3beta -ol, an unreduced Delta 8,14 sterol, is shown. FK mutant seedlings accumulate unreduced biosynthetic intermediates (green), indicating a block at the sterol C-14 reductase step.
