Transgene-mediated cosuppression in Caenorhabditis elegans. Shown here is a fluorescent in situ hybridization (FISH) analysis of the subnuclear location of extrachromosomal DNA arrays (yellow) and the silenced spo-11 locus (magenta) in C. elegans pachytene nuclei. FISH analysis fails to detect pairing between the transgene array and the affected locus. Thus, functional repression is not a consequence of physical association between transgenes and endogenous genes. (For details, see Dernburg et al., p. 1578).
