Sox10 is essential for the development of peripheral glial cells. Shown here are cross sections through the spinal cord, dorsal root ganglia, and spinal nerves of wild-type (upper image) and homozygous Sox10Dom mutant mice (lower image). Peripheral glial cells and neuronal cells are visualized with antibodies directed against BFABP (red) and TuJ-1 (green), respectively. On the left side of each image only the red signal is shown; an overlay of the red and green signals is shown on the mirrored right side. Note that in homozygous Sox10Dom mutant animals neuronal cells within the dorsal root ganglia form, but glial cells in the dorsal root ganglia and along the spinal nerves are not generated.
