Cbfa1 is a hypertrophic chondrocyte differentiation factor. Shown here is an in situ hybridization analysis of Cbfa1 expression in a scapula section of a 14.5 dpc mouse embryo. As visualized by the Cbfa1 probe (red), Cbfa1 is expressed in prehypertrophic chondrocytes and to a lesser extent in hypertrophic chondrocytes. Cbfa1 expression precedes and is required for hypertrophic chondrocyte differentiation in some skeletal elements. (For details, see Takeda et al., p. 467.)
