Heparin-binding isoforms of vascular endothelial growth factor type A (VEGF-A) regulate mammalian blood vessel branching morphogenesis. Shown here is an immunofluorescence analysis of a wild-type mouse embryo brain using antibodies directed against VEGF (red) and PECAM (green), a vessel endothelium-specific marker. The PECAM-positive microvessel sprout extends numerous filopodia (green) towards localized deposits of VEGF (red) to orient its growth; the colocalization of these structures is shown in yellow.
