The Drosophila wingful gene encodes an extracellular feedback inhibitor of the Wnt protein family member, Wingless. Shown here is an immunofluorescence analysis of a Drosophila wing primordium using antibodies directed against Vestigal (red) and
-galactosidase expressed from a wingless-lacZ reporter gene (yellow). In the wing primordium, vestigal is expressed in response to the secretion of Wingless by a thin stripe of cells along the dorso-ventral compartment boundary. Wingful functions during larval development as a feedback antagonist of Wingless (For details see Gerlitz and Basler, p. 1055.) It should be noted that the authors modified the original image by the addition of a mosaic tile background solely for stylistic purposes.
