The Caenorhabditis elegans major sperm protein (MSP) acts as an antagonistic ligand for the VAB-1 ephrin receptor protein tyrosine kinase. Shown here is an electron micrograph of a C. elegans spermatozoa in the spermatheca, where MSP was detected by immuno-gold labeling. MSP signals oocytes, which are arrested in meiotic prophase, to resume mitosis and ovulate. (For details, see Miller et al., p. 187.)
