Cover Cover The Drosophila Smoothened (Smo) protein C-terminal tail is essential for transduction of the Hedgehog (Hh) signal. Shown here is an immunofluorescence analysis of a late third instar wing disc containing cell clones that were engineered to express either a membrane-tethered Smo C-terminal tail (Myr-SmoCT) or the mammalian cell surface protein CD2. The disc was stained to show the expression of decapentaplegic-lacZ (dpp-lacZ; blue) and CD2 (red). Expression of Myr-SmoCTin anteriorly situated cells elicits Hh pathway activation, as indicated by that ecoptic expression of dpp-lacZ. (For details, see Jia et al., p.2709.)
