Expression of the VEGF receptor, Flk-1, and the transcription factor, Tal1, regulate hematopoietic, endothelial, and smooth muscle cell lineage specification in the developing mammalian embryo. Shown here is an immunofluorescence analysis of Flk-1-positive, single-cell-derived blast colony forming cells that were cultured for 7 d on type IV collagen in the presence of VEGF, using antibodies directed against the platelet-endothelial cell adhesion molecule (PECAM; green) and smooth muscle actin (SMA; red). Adherent cells are a mixture of endothelial (green) and smooth muscle cells (red). (For details, see Ema et al., p. 380.)
