Cover MSH2 is the conserved partner in several heterodimeric protein complexes essential in mismatch repair (MMR), a pathway critical to the maintenance of genomic stability. Shown here are 36 lines of MMR-deficient Arabidopsis (Atmsh2-1), propagated in parallel through six generations of seed-to-seed descent. Sixth-generation plants show a wide variety of phenotypes, and have reduced germination efficiency, fertility, seed/silique development, seed set, and survival rates. Wild-type lines (not shown here) show no unusual phenotypes, confirming MMR to be paramount in the maintenance of genomic stability in Arabidopsis. (For details, see Hoffman et al., 2676
