Cover Runx1 regulates muscle wasting. Shown here is an immunofluorescence analysis of a whole-mount wild-type mouse diaphragm muscle, using antibodies directed against bungarotoxin (red), which labels acetylcholine receptors; phalloidin (blue), which labels actin; and Neurofilament and Synaptophysin (green), which label axons and nerve terminals, respectively. Runx1 is expressed poorly in innervated muscle but is strongly expressed in disused muscle. In the absence of Runx1 induction, denervated myofibers undergo severe muscle wasting, indicating that Runx1 induction is required to maintain the integrity of disused muscle (For details, see Wang et al., p. 1715. The image was courteously provided by Marko Jevsek).
