Cover C-Myc activation in β cells induces islet angiogenesis and endothelial cell proliferation. Shown here is an immunofluorescence analysis of pancreatic islet cells 1 d after acute activation of c-Myc, using antibodies directed against the cell proliferation marker Ki67 (red) and the endothelial cell marker Meca-32 (green). Cells were counterstained with the nuclear marker Hoechst (blue). The Myc-induced angiogenic switch is mediated by interleukin 1β-dependent release of extracellular matrix-bound VEGF.
